Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, the cultural hub of Queensland.
It is the chief port and main industrial centre in the State. There is a container terminal at Hamilton Wharf. The city is built on both sides of the Brisbane River. Discovered in 1823 by John Oxley, it was established as a penal settlement in 1824 by the then Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane, until 1839, when most of the convicts were moved to the township of Eagle Farm, a few kilometres downriver. In 1842 the area around Brisbane was made available to free settlers. On 10 December 1859 it became the capital city.
The city hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games and began a cosmopolitan transformation which was fully embraced during World Expo ’88.
