SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE![]() Sydney's most famous icon, acclaimed as one of the most outstanding buildings of the 20th Century. Designed by Danish architect Joern Utzon, and taking 14 years to complete, he resigned mid way through construction due to political interference, never to return. Begun in 1959, opened in 1973 at a cost of $102 million, $95 million more than originally estimated. ![]() Over 3,000 performances of opera, concerts, theatre, film and dance, each year in its four auditoriums.
